Shotcreting is a process where concrete is pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. Shotcrete undergoes placement and compaction at the same time due to the force with which it is projected from the nozzle. It can be impacted onto any type of surface, including vertical or overhead areas.

A concrete pump is a machine used for transferring concrete by pumping. There are two types of concrete pumps. A line pump transports concrete from a hopper to the pour site along a connected pipes and hoses. A boom pump is similar but features an hydraulic arm which can lift and place the concrete pipes into particularly difficult access areas.

Shotcrete is very useful in hard rock mining. Development of decline pathway to go underground is critical for movement of heavy machinery, miners, and material. Shotcrete helps make these paths safe from any ground fall. In-ground swimming pools can use either the wet or dry application method.

Thicknesses depend on the structure and surface (surface prep is the key to proper bonding of shotcrete) the shotcrete is being applied to. Depending on the application 1/4 flash coat to 1 inch thickness can be the minimum.

Immediately after finishing, cure shotcrete continuously by maintaining in a moist condition for seven days or until specified strength is attained or until succeeding shotcrete layers are placed.

Nationally, the average cost for concrete resurfacing is $3 – $10 per square foot, depending on the condition of the original concrete and local labor costs. For smaller projects, some contractors charge a flat fee of at least $500 – $1,000. The new concrete must also be sealed, which costs $20 – $80 per gallon

As a new pool owner, it’s important that you water your shotcrete shell two to three times a day for 14 days the day after your pool has been shotcreted. Doing this strengthens your shotcrete shell and prepares it to be filled with water.
